After Victoria Thain Gioias' daughter was born with a cleft lip, she was perplexed as to why that happened, since she made sure to take all her necessary prenatal vitamins which included folic acid that stopped the condition of cleft lip. This led her to dive into research, which helped her discover that 40 to 60 percent of women have a common genetic mutation–known as the MTHFR variant–which prevents them from turning folic acid into folate, the body's usable format.

Victoria Thain Gioia and Alex Taylor shared similar ideas, and this led them to employ the services of Dr. Banafsheh Bayati MD FACOG to create Perelel, which is allegedly the first OBGYN co-founded vitamin and supplement company.
